New Student Registration

Kindergarten Age Requirements

For new kindergarten students, children must turn 5 years old on or before September 30 of the kindergarten year.

Preschool Programs

If your child will not meet kindergarten age requirements, your child may be eligible for one of our preschool program options. For more information about our Early Childhood Special Education Services, Peer Model, or Head Start and VPI classes, please call 540-775-8639 or visit our Preschool Programs page.

Variance Requests

  • Students must register with the school that is zoned for their residence. If you aren't sure which school your home is zoned for, please call the Transportation Department at 775-3870 or view the School Attendance Zone map on the KGCS Transportation webpage or view the King George County GIS School Locator to enter your address.

  • Variance applications (click here) for non-employees are available on the division website. Requests must be submitted by June 2, 2023.

  • Variance determinations are based in part on class size, so decisions are not made until closer to the beginning of the school year. If you have questions about variances, please contact Stacey Hilderbrand at 775-5833 x 8605.

Instructional Model

KGCS provides in-person instruction full-time, 5 days a week. There are no virtual options for the 2022-2023 school year.

NEW STUDENTS FOR THE CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR

You will need to upload the following documents in the applicable sections of the online registration process during Step 2. Each item must be submitted as a single PDF while active in the PowerSchool Enrollment system and before pressing 'SUBMIT' on the final registration screen. Please gather these documents in advance and save to the device you will use to access PowerSchool Enrollment. PowerSchool Enrollment is best accessed via a laptop or larger device rather than a phone.

  • Proof of Residency in King George - See below for additional information.

In some circumstances, additional documentation may be required.

  • Grade Report from previous school - Transcript (MS/HS) or report card (ES/MS); KGCS will request all other documents directly from the previous school at the time of enrollment.

  • Copy of student IEP or 504 - If applicable; KGCS will receive an official copy from the previous school, but it is helpful to review prior to enrollment to schedule any meetings or services as soon as possible.

  • Custody Papers - If applicable; If someone other than a biological parent named on the birth certificate enrolls the child, we must have proof of custody or legal guardianship before proceeding. Powers of Attorney (exception: active duty military under Title 10, United States Code, § 1044b), notarized guardianship papers, petitions for custody, and other similar documents are not accepted for enrollment in Virginia. Custody must be adjudicated with the courts prior to enrollment.

The following documents can only be provided during your final in-person registration appointment. You must bring them with you to your scheduled appointment because they must be verified in person by the registrar. Copies, uploads, or electronic versions are not acceptable.

  • Original Birth Certificate - Copies are not acceptable. If you need a new birth certificate in Virginia, information can be found at the Virginia Office of Vital Records. DMV is also able to assist in obtaining birth certificates.

  • Parent/Guardian Government issued picture ID - Examples include passport, driver's license, military ID card. This is to verify the identity of the enrolling parent.
